
The talk is based on the forthcoming book by the speaker titled “History of Urban Form: India” by Oxford University Press. The talk will introduce the conceptual framework that have been used to understand the historical evolution of Indian cities of the past. The contingencies of geography, the authority of state and the role of mercantile cultureĀ have been correlated with the evolution of urban form in India. The talk gives a historical perspective to the questions of the “imagination of cities and its public places” in the Indian context.
